Elkader Register, Thur., 08 June 1922. Strawberry Point columns.
Another old soldier of the Civil War has answered the last roll call and joined the regular grand army in the better world.
Geo. Grannis was born at Dunkirk, N.Y., and passed away last Friday evening at the Joe Balluff home where he had been staying for the past few weeks. When a mere child he came here with his parents and has since made this place his home.
When the Civil War broke out Mr. Grannis was ready to go and fought bravely for his country during the four years and endured many hardships.
At the time of his death he was 79 years of age. Funeral services were held at the Balluff home Sunday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Maxwell and was largely attended. The G.A.R. and the American Legion attended in a body. The pall bearers were members of the American Legion and bore the casket covered with many beautiful flowers to its last resting place and he was laid to rest with the military honors.
He leaves one sister Mrs. Vina Lyle of Long Beach, Calif., and two half-sisters Mrs. Chas. A. Smith of Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Chas. Wiltse of Stettle, Alberta, Canada, besides other relatives and friends to mourn his death. Thus another one of the old soldiers has gone to his reward.
