Clayton County Register, Thur., 23 Nov. 1933. Volga City column.

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church here for Irving Phillips, who passed away at his home here Tuesday. The pastor, Rev. A. B. Chamberlain, of Arlington, officiated at the services and at Hill Crest cemetery, where burial was made. The casket bearers were C. E. Lovett, W. E. Ewing, Robert Duff, H. W. White, Ben Roys and Fred Keeling.

Mr. Phillips was born Nov. 14, 1855, at Volga City, and died on his 78th birthday, Nov. 14, 1933. He had been in poor health for several months, but his death came very suddenly. His entire life was spent in Volga City and vicinity. After the death of his mother in 1911 he continued to live in the old homestead. For a number of years he was sexton of Hill Crest cemetery, taking a great interest in the work. He was a most dependable workman, doing well whatever he had to do. He was a faithful friend and a true neighbor and whenever his health permitted was a steadfast attendant at church and Sunday School. He was a strong advocate of temperance and interested in every movement for betterment, being a great reader and a deep thinker. He was a Master Mason, taking his part in all Masonic affairs. Of him his friends say in all words of the Bible:

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of the ungodly nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight was in the law of the Lord; and in His law did he meditate day and night."

Mr. Phillips is survived by several cousins and a large number of friends who mourn the passing of this good man, and cherish his memory.
