Clayton County Register, Thur., 09 Nov. 1933.

GUTTENBERG: Richard Werner, former long-time resident of Guttenberg, died suddenly of heart trouble Saturday evening at six o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Godfredson, at Algona, Iowa. Mr. Werner had not been ill, but on Saturday evening at six o'clock when he came into the house of his daughter and took off his coat to hang it on a hanger, he suddenly fell to the floor, dead. His sudden death came as a shock to all. Mr. Werner was born in Germany on Aug. 4, 1858, and was 75 years and seven months of age at the time of his death. When a young man he came to America, settling at Guttenberg, where he lived for many years. On February 4, 1886, he was married at Guttenberg to Miss Amelia Eckart, who preceded him in death Sept. 22, 1928. After the death of his wife, Mr. Werner made his home with his children. For many years at various times he was employed at the former old Zimmerman & Ives sawmill and the Ihm Bros. general store and by the Ed. P. Eberhard Lumber Co. here. Mr. Werner was a man of pleasing personality. To do acts of kindness for his family and friends was his greatest pleasure in life at all times, and his memories will be forever cherished by all who knew him. Mr. Werner was a member of the local Woodman lodge. His death is deeply mourned by two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Godfredson, of Algona, and Mrs. Raymond Harvey, of Portland, Ore., one son, Albert Werner, of Allison; 11 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends, who will all sadly miss him. The body was brought here Tuesday and taken to the Peerman funeral parlors, from where the funeral was held, Wednesday afternoon. Interment was made in the City cemetery here. The funeral was largely attended, as the deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
