Clayton County Register, Thur., 26 Oct. 1933. Guttenberg column.
Joseph Nigg, long time, highly regarded resident of Guttenberg, passed away at the home of his son, Leo Nigg, here Tuesday morning at 4:30 o'clock, at the age of 70 years, six months and 20 days. Mr. Nigg had not been in the best of health of late and on Monday evening, shortly after ten o'clock, suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never rallied and which caused his death Tuesday morning. Of late he had been making his home with his son, Leo Nigg, and family, by whom he was always given the tenderest of care. Deceased was born at Vadus, Lichtenstein, Europe, on April 4, 1863. He came to America when 19 years of age, and settled at Dubuque, Iowa. On August 28, 1887, he was married at Dubuque to Miss Josephine Rusch, who preceded him in death on May 30, 1924. In 1901 the family came to Guttenberg to reside, where Mr. Nigg spent the remainder of his ambitious life. When a young man he served an apprenticeship in learning the plasterer, stone and brickmason trade, which occupation he followed successfully for many years. His sudden death came as a shock to his family and many relatives and friends. He is survived by three children, Mrs. John Degnan, Mrs. John H. Kregel and Leo Nigg, all of Guttenberg; 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Emil Nigg of Dubuque, and Ferdinand Nigg, of Valdus, Lichtenstein, Europe, and numerous other relatives and friends, who will all sadly miss this good and true man. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church in Guttenberg on Friday morning, at nine o'clock. The body will be laid at rest in Mount Olivet cemetery. Two daughters and two sons have also preceded the father in death.
