Strawberry Point: Funeral services for J. J. Adams were held at the home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. T. J. Elwick, pastor of the M.E. church. Two favorite hymns of the deceased, "Rock Of Ages" and "Sweet Bye And Bye," were sung by Mrs. B. W. Talcott and Miss Marie Jewell. The pall bearers were: Ed Donath, W. D. Opperman, John Tracy, Robert Osborne, Jas. McTaggert and August Storbeck. Interment took place in the Strawberry Point beautiful cemetery.
In 1849 Eliza P. and Jeremiah Adams established a home in Volga Bottom, now known as Volga City. They were one of the first three families to locate in that vicinity. Unto these two good people nine children were born, four of whom died in infancy; Charley, who died thirteen years ago, David who passed away ten years ago, Susie who died in 1931, Jane, who lives at Volga City, and Jacob J., the eighth of the family to answer the Master's call.
Jacob J. Adams was born in Volga City May 18, 1853, and departed this life Aug. 16, 1933, having attained the age of 80 years, two months and 29 days. He lived the greater part of his life in and near the towns of Volga City and Strawberry Point, coming to this place in 1900, which has since been his home. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ella Antrim, Feb. 19, 1895.
He is survived by his wife, an adopted daughter, Mrs. Pearl Shadle, and two grandchildren, of this place; also one sister, Mrs. Jane Daggett of Volga City, the last surviving member of the large family, besides a host of relatives and a large circle of friends.
Mr. Adams, better known as "Jake," was a man of estimable character, well-liked by all who knew him. Always a lover of outdoor sports, he took great pride in his ability as a fisherman and marksman. Because of his love for nature, he surrounded himself with pets, until the last few years when advancing years and failing health prohibited him from caring for them. He was always a God fearing man, although he made no public demonstrations except his profession of faith at the time of joining with the Christian Church at Volga City. He was a loving husband, a true friend, and ever thoughtful of his neighbors. He will be greatly missed by the community. May he rest in peace.
