Mrs. Anna Marie Wilke died on Wednesday afternoon, July 26, in her Elkader home where she had lived for sixty years. Born on June 9, 1852, at Guttenberg, she celebrated her eighty-first birthday last month. She was the daughter of Christian and Sophia Gossman.
On May 3, 1873, she married Henry William Wilke, and settled that year in the home that she has continued to occupy throughout her life. Two of her children, Ina and Katie, died in childhood. Her husband died in 1922. She is survived by by one son, G. H. Wilke of Elkader, and three daughters, Mrs. Johan Hopeman of Northfield, Minnesota; Miss Ida Wilke and Mrs. H. J. Conrad of Elkader; and by five grandchildren; Edith and Robert Conrad, Mrs. H. A. Patterson of New York, Mrs. Thomas Luther of Los Angeles and Paul Wilke of Fergus Falls, Minn.; and by two great-grandchildren, Paul Jr. and Peter of Fergus Falls.
Mrs. Wilke's life was one of activity and usefulness and her greatest unhappiness in later life was her inability to do things for others.
During the last month she has enjoyed the privilege of seeing all of those loved ones. She also leaves four brothers: Chris Gossman of Lester, Iowa; Henry Gossman of Elkader; Louis Gossman of Northfield, Minnesota; and William Gossman of Farmersburg, Iowa.
