Clayton County Register, Thur., 18 May 1933. Guttenberg column.

Fred J. Schroeder, pioneer resident of Guttenberg, passed away at his home here on Friday evening, May 11, 1933, at the age of 84 years, seven months and 23 days, the cause being due mostly to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Schroeder was born at Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, September 19, 1848, a son of Mr. and Mrs. August Schroeder. In the year 1850 he came to America with his parents, settling in Clayton county, Iowa, and since that time, with the exception of a few years when he resided at Communia, Mr. Schroeder has made Guttenberg his home. In 1873 he was married at Guttenberg to Miss Dorothea Wohlbrandt, who preceded him in death on November 19, 1918. One son, August, also preceded the father in death on April 4, 1921. For many years Mr. Schroeder was employed here at the former Zimmerman & Ives sawmill and also by the Milwaukee Railroad company here. To do acts of kindness for his family and friends was his greatest pleasure during life at all times. To know him was to like him. His death is deeply mourned by one daughter, Martha, of Guttenberg, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends who will all sadly miss this good and true Christian man.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. J. F. Adix at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church here Monday afternoon, with interment in the City cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
