Clayton County Register, Thur., 11 May 1933. Guttenberg column.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dietrich Essman, nee Dorothea Luehr, pioneer resident of this community, were conducted by the Rev. W. J. F. Adix at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church here Wednesday afternoon of last week. The body was laid at rest in the City cemetery. The funeral was very well attended. Mrs. Essman died at the home of her son, Arthur Essman, in Jefferson township, April 30, 1933, at the age of 86 years, eight months and one day, the cause of her death being due mostly to the infirmities of old age. She was born in Hanover, Germany, August 29, 1846, coming to America with her parents when seven years old and settling in this community, where the remainder of her ambitious and true Christian life was spent. In December, 1862, she was married at Guttenberg to Mr. Dietrich Essman, who preceded her in death July 11, 1906. In the death of Mrs. Essman this community loses one of its most worthy mothers. To know her was to like her, and her memories will forever be cherished by all who knew her. Her death is deeply mourned by two children, Arthur Essman of Jefferson township and Mrs. Jacob Biederman of Guttenberg; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Luehr, of Ashland, Nebr., and August Luehr of College Springs, Colo., and many other relatives and friends, by whom she will sadly be missed.
