DIED. In McGregor, Aug. 6th, 1888, Joseph Bayless, aged about [51?] years.

The deceased was born in England and came to this country in an early day. For years he farmed on a place 3 1/4 miles from town, beyond the Moody settlement, where his wife and two children are buried, and where on Tuesday he was laid at rest.

A son and daughter survive him, Covil Bayless and Mrs. Josephine Watson.

He served in L. Company, 4th Iowa Cavalry, three years and one month. He was a member of Hervey Dix Post, No. 371, G.A.R. The funeral services were conducted under the auspices of the Post.

Disposing of his farm he came to McGregor a few years ago and has since practiced in Veteran [veterinary] Surgery, in which he was quite successful. He was eccentric, and held to many peculiar traits of character, yet he was kind hearted and genial.

A faithful and true soldier, a companion in comradeship, he has laid down life's armor and accepted the final discharge from all worldly service, to join the grand army in the great encampment on Zion's field of glory.

Notes:
-Correct spelling of surname is Baylis.

-1856 Iowa State Census, Mendon twp., Clayton co. enumerated Joseph Baylis, age 27, b. England; his wife Jane, age 26, b. England and their son, Henry Covil Baylis, age 1, b. IA. Also in household is Ann Baylis, age 18, b. England, widowed and Arthur Flexman, age 18, b. England.

-1870 census, Mendon twp., Clayton co. enumerated Joseph Bayless as a Vet. Surgeon, age 34, b. England; Maryann Bayless, age 23, b. Ohio, parents not foreign born; Covil, age 15, b. Iowa and Josephine, age 14, b. Iowa.

-1880 census Mendon twp., Clayton co. enumerated J. Baylis, age 45, b. Gr. Brit. and his wife Mary Ann, age 32, b. Ohio, parents b. OH

-Maryann most likely was either his housekeeper or 2nd wife, - her age as reported in 1870 & 1880 census make her much too young to be the mother of Covil & Josephine. Confirmation would be appreciated.

-The 1880 census enumerating the daughter Josephine with her husband John W. Watson, indicate both of her parents were born in England, which is consistant with the 1856 census. Also Josephine's 1939 death cert. names her father as Joseph Baylis, but mother as unknown.
