The death of Baptist Beck, long-time resident of Guttenberg, occurred at is home here on Friday, at the age of 81 years, four months and 19 days, following a short illness. Deceased was born in Lichtenstein, Europe, October 14, 1851. He made several trips from the place of his birth to America and return, before deciding to remain in America. He was married to Miss Marie Herberger. For a time the couple lived at Turkey River, Iowa, later coming to Guttenberg to make their home, where deceased spent the remainder of his ambitious life. While a resident of Guttenberg Mr. Beck was successfully engaged in truck farming and the bee and honey business, making many large shipments of honey to eastern markets. Mr. Beck was a well read man.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Carl Beck of Guttenberg, three daughters, Mrs. Anna Zimmer of Dubuque, Mrs. Lena Behrend of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Sophia Cook of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one half-brother residing in Europe, and many other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. James Sopko at the Beck home on Sunday afternoon, with interment in the City cemetery. The funeral was well attended.
