Clayton County Register, Thur., 03 Mar. 1933.
Herman Dietrick Von Talge was born in Hanover, Germany, Sept. 10, 1851, and died at his home at Wood, Iowa, on Monday afternoon, Feb. 20, 1933, at the age of 81 years, five months and 24 days, his death being caused from hernia and other complications resulting from old age. Mr. Von Talge came to this country when a young man, landing in Colesburg, Iowa, his desired destination. Here he worked as a farm hand for a number of years. While in this community he met Ida Alvina Thiel, with whom he was united in marriage Jan. 12, 1881. To this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters, all of whom have preceded the father in death except one daughter, Mrs. Ben Wessel, of this place, and one son, George, who lives near Colesburg. After their marriage they made their home near Colesburg for a few years, later moving to Manchester, where they farmed for a length of time. From here they moved to a rented farm, west of Greeley. Having accumulated some money through thrift and economy they decided to purchase a farm near Wood, where he has since made his home. He, together with his wife, were some of those early sturdy pioneers of this community, who faced the hardships of early frontier life, once having placed their hand to the plow, did not turn back, but plodded on with firm determination that they would win and win they did; and today you can see evidence of their thrift in the fine farms that have been wrought by toil, self-sacrifice and devotion to home, state, church, schools and country.
Mr. Von Talge was always a hard-working man. To sit idle was a thing he could not do, even in his declining years he was always busy at something. He was a good father, neighbor, citizen and friend. He was a member of the Wood Methodist Episcopal church. One of the hardest things that came to his life was when his daughter Bertha was very suddenly taken from them in death; from this shock he never fully recovered. On Nov. 30th of the past year the loss of his life's companion in death made life lose its silvery lining and he desired to go home to God to be with those he had loved but who had preceded him to yonder home a day ahead.
He leaves to mourn his passing one son, one daughter, one brother, two sisters, 15 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Interment was made in the Ebenezer cemetery, beside the bodies of the other members of his family.
