Clayton County Register, Thur., 02 Feb. 1933. Guttenberg column.
Funeral services for Joachim Hagen, 73 years old and long-time highly regarded resident of this community, were conducted by the Rev. W. J. F. Adix of St. John's Evangelical church here last Thursday afternoon, with interment in the City cemetery. The funeral was very well attended by relatives and friends from far and near. Mr. Hagen had been in poor health for some time previous to his death, and of late had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Fred Timmerman, and husband, at Dubuque, where he was given the best of care. All was done for him that could be done to save his life, but all to no avail. The body was brought to Guttenberg Thursday for burial. Deceased was born at Kleinkraus, Germany, where he grew to manhood and was married to Miss Elizabeth Schoal, who preceded him in death five years ago. Forty-nine years ago the family came to America and settled in Clayton County, Iowa. For a number of years Mr. Hagen was successfully engaged in farming in this community, coming to Guttenberg nine years ago to reside. He was a man who stood for justice and righteousness at all times, and in his death the community loses a most worthy citizen. To do kind acts for his family and friends was his greatest pleasure in life, which won him many friends, by whom his memories will be forever cherished. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Timmerman of Dubuque; one step-son, Theodore Buehring, of Jefferson township; one brother, Henry Hagen of Jefferson township, and by many other relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed.
