Clayton County Register, Thur., 12 Jan. 1933.
Louis H. Schroeder was born on a farm in Jefferson township, Clayton County, Iowa, on March 12, 1857, where he grew to young manhood. Later he learned the carpentry and cabinet-maker's trade and for many years he was engaged in the carpenter and contractor business in Guttenberg. He was also engaged in the hotel business here for a time. Mr. Schroeder was also one of northeastern Iowa's pioneers and able musicians, playing many engagements with various bands and orchestras in this section of the state. He also took active part in many musical organizations in Guttenberg a number of years ago. To do kind acts for his family and friends was his greatest pleasure in life at all times, which made him many warm friends, by whom his memories will be forever cherished. He was a man who stood for righteousness and justice at all times. To know him was to respect him. He was a self made man from an educational stand point, being well read on all important subjects. In politics he was an independent man. He made friends wherever he went.
Mr. Schroeder's parents were pioneer settlers of this community. For some time he was employed as a carpenter for the Standard Oil Co. As a mechanic he was unsurpassed. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Schroeder is survived by his widow, whose maiden name was Miss Pauline Thoma, a resident of Garnavillo, and to whom he was married June 23, 1891. One son, Albert, of Los Angeles, Calif., one daughter, Mrs. H. F. Schierholz, of Guttenberg; one grandson, Lester Schierholz, of Guttenberg; one brother, Edward Schroeder, of Postville, and many other relatives and friends survive him.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. James Sopko at St. Paul's United Lutheran church in Guttenberg, Tuesday afternoon, with interment in the City cemetery. The funeral was very well attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
