Sophia Phelan (nee Kregel) was born in Jefferson Township, Clayton County, Iowa, on December 18, 1889, At the age of 14 years she with her parents moved to Guttenberg, Iowa, and there she lived until 1917, when she took up her residence in Elkport, Iowa, where she lived up to the time of her death, December 6, 1928, aged 38 years, 11 months and 18 days. She was married at Garber, Iowa, to James Phelan on October 29, 1919. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. One son preceded the mother in death on October 20, 1922. Junior, Jerome and Donnie May survive her with the grief stricken husband and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kregel of Garber, Iowa, five brothers and one sister. Laura and Joe at Garber, Jack and Ray at Guttenberg, Edward at Garnavillo and Gregor at Elgin, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held at St. Michael's church at Garber Monday, Father Goetzinger officiating. Burial in St. Michael's Cemetery at Elkport. The deceased was greatly beloved by all and her funeral was attended by a large concourse of people who deeply sympathize with the bereaved family in the death of their beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister. May she rest in peace.
