Clayton County Register, Thur., 18 Oct. 1928.
George Curtis Smith, son of John Smith and his wife Alvina Smith, nee Beemer, was born at Edgewood, Clayton county, Iowa, in the year 1878, on the 28th day of May. His boyhood days were spent on the Smith homestead where he was born. On April 18, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Bahr, daughter of Peter and Sophia Bahr. Mr. Smith was a carpenter by trade and lived at Elkport until the terrible flood waters caused them to move to the new town of West Haven, where they lived for nearly three years. Mr. Smith was ailing for some time and it seems every _____ his ailment became worse. After his marriage he was duly instructed by his pastor, Rev. W. Paulson, and was baptized and confirmed March 24, 19-_ (looks like 1918). He at once joined the Ev. Luth. Immanuels church of Elkport and has remained a true member up to his passing.
He was working at Elkader on an oil station which he intended to operate after being completed, but Friday morning, Oct. 5th, he took sick and upon advice of the doctor he was taken to Elkader, Saturday, Oct. 6th, staying with his brother-in-law, John Bahr. Here he was given the best of care, his faithful wife never leaving his bedside. Early Saturday morning, Oct. 13th he was called to his last rest, which he longed for as he said Jesus has already for me to rest.
Those left to mourn his untimely passing are his wife, two brothers and two sisters, and other relatives and a host of friends who will miss his smile and friendly greetings. He reached the age of 50 years, five months and 15 days.
Funeral services were held Oct. 16th at the home of the deceased and in the Ev. Luth. church at Elkport. Interment was made in the cemetery of the church at Elkport. Rev. F. E. Damm officiated.
