This community was severely shocked last Wednesday morning to hear the news that Wm. Hand had suddenly passed away during the night. Mr. Hand who had conducted a cafe and pool hall here for the past eight years was well liked by all who knew him and it was a great shock to all his friends. On Tuesday morning he had been about his place of business, but in the afternoon lay down as he was not feeling the best, that evening his condition became serious, and about 10 o'clock he passed away.

William N. Hand was born July 5th, 1882, at McGregor, Ia., the son of John and Margaret Hand. Deceased received his early education and training in the schools at Elkport, and in which community he was reared to manhood. On April 24th, 1901, he was united in marriage with Lucy F. Monnahan, of Volga City, and to that union three daughters were born, namely: Phylis, Florence, and Ethel.

Besides the widow, deceased is survived by three daughters, Phylis, Florence, and Ethel, all at home; two sisters, Mrs. R. Burns of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. K. Needham, Waukon, Ia.; and one brother John of Waukon, Ia.

After his marriage in 1901 the deceased lived on a farm near Elkport until 1921, when they purchased the Cafe and Pool Hall they now own. Ever since Mr. Hand entered the business circles of Elkader he has been active in all community affairs. He was also active in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and K of C Lodge of which he was a member.

The funeral service was held Friday morning, September 14, at 10:00 a.m., from St. Joseph's Catholic Church and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.

Relatives in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. John Hand of Waukon; Mr. and Mrs. P. Needham, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Needham, Mr. and Mrs. Barthy Needham, all of Waukon; Mrs. R. Burns of St. Paul, Minn.; Mr. John Monnahan of Edgewood; Mr. James Monnahan, Mrs. B. Taylor, of Volga City; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Doran, son Carl and daughter Byrdella, and James Welch, of Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. A. Steinfeldy, Hazel and Ralph Smith, of Dubuque; Joseph and Lucy Needham, of Waukon.
