Harley Gordon White was born near National, Iowa, on the first day of October, 1875, and he was the youngest of eleven children born to Thos. D. and Celinda White.
While still a young boy the family moved to Postville, Iowa, and Gordon made his home there until he had finished high school. He attended college at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where he made an enviable record in his studies and in athletics.
After finishing college he was athletic director at Rockford and later returned to Cornell as baseball coach. After resigning this position he made his home with his mother at Volga, caring for her until her death in 1914.
In 1919 he was united in marriage to Rose O'Brien of Volga. To this union one child was born on June 4, 1924, but mother and child departed this life within a few hours.
After the death of his wife he remained in Volga until the spring of 1928 when he went to Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. Here he lived with his sister, Ida, until his death which occurred on August 24 at the Miller Hospital in Kimball, Nebr., after an illness of only a few days.
The deceased was a man of sterling character and a citizen of the highest type. Throughout his entire life he was admired for his unselfish devotion and his straight-forwardness. Through his activities in athletics and horse racing, he assumed a wide acquaintance throughout the country, and a host of friends and admirers will deeply mourn his passing.
He is survived by two brothers, Dr. G.G. White of Elkader and R.D. White of Volga, and two sisters - Mrs. A.P. Bock of Waukon and Mrs. Sumner Miller of Pine Bluffs.
Besides these he leaves to mourn his death many other relatives and a host of friends.
The funeral was held in Volga on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 28th. Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery beside his wife and infant daughter.
The casket bearers were F.?. Phillips, Tim C. Hurley, Austin Thyne, Will Goodin, H.L. Taylor and Karl J. Konzen.
We join in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
