Clayton County Register, Thur., 09 Aug. 1928. Strawberry Point column.
Our people were shocked last Friday evening when word came from the People's hospital at Independence stating that John C. Phelps had passed away at 8:30 o'clock from an abcess on the brain. J. S. Phelps was born at Marysville, Tenn., Feb. 23, 1883. He came to this place 26 years ago. He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie L. Carmichael of this place, at Blooming Prairie, Minn., Aug. 6, 1918. To this union one daughter, Jean Mae, was born. Besides his sorrowing wife and little daughter he leaves five brothers and two sisters, besides an aged mother and other relatives and friends. Funeral services occurred at the Congregational church Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Shelmidine, the pastor, assisted by Rev. T. J. Elwick, the M.E. pastor. The casket supporters were six of his brother Masons: R. C. Barnes, M. F. Harwood, Otto Fuehr, L. Schmidt, D. G. Courtnage and L. D. Davis. Interment was made in our beautiful cemetery. John, or "Jack", as he was better known was a friend to everybody. When one was in trouble no one was more willing to help than he and he always had a kind word and smile for everyone. He was a member of the Congregational church and lived up to its teachings. He was a member of the A.F. & A.M., the I.O.O.F. and K.P.
