Peter was an engineer at the W.C.F. & N. power house in Waterloo and was struck in the face at noon, June 26th, by a 2,000 + volt flash of electricity when he attempted to throw a switch. The flash burned his face, set fire to his shirt, the flames of which burned his arms and abdomen. He was taken to Allen Memorial hospital, where he was in great pain for several days until death finally relieved him at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30th.

Peter J. Scheffert was born in Elkader, October 12, 1897, being thirty years and eight months of age at the time of his death. (The rest of this paragraph to blurred to transcribe.)

Besides his widow and two children, Paul and (possibly Lucille), he is survived by his mother, Mrs. B. Scheffert, one sister, Mrs. James S______, one brother, Joseph Scheffert, and two uncles, John and Peter (possibly Tresch), all of Elkader. His father, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

Peter was an honest and upright man and was loved and highly respected by all who knew him. An entire bus-load of friends and acquaintances came up from Waterloo the day of the funeral to pay their last respects as did also friends from Cedar Falls, Monona, Dubuque and Marshalltown, this state, and Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Chicago, Ill. He will be greatly missed not only by his relatives but his friends as well.
