Carlyle Brunson Phillips was born in Athens, Crawford County, Penn., Nov. 15th, 1835, and died at Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Dec. 21st, 1910. His boyhood days were mostly spent in Elgin, Ill. He came to Volga, Iowa, in 185_. In 1867 he was married to Miss Charlotte Butler. They made their home in Volga until the year 1893, when they moved onto their farm west of town, where they have since resided. Three years ago, on account of failing health, they decided on a change of climate and went west to Washington, returning to their home on last Thanksgiving Day. He was sick but a few days. He realized that he had not long to live. Although a great sufferer he was patient, trusting in Him who doeth all things well. He loved his home and family. He was very radical on the subject of temperance and not afraid to give voice to his convictions.
He leaves a wife, an aged mother 98 years of age, three sons, Sherwood Addison, Carl Butler and Arthur Lincoln, Mrs. Nora Lehman, two grandchildren, two brothers, and four sisters, besides nephews and nieces and numerous friends to mourn his death.
The funeral services were held in the M.E. church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Bear, pastor of the M.E. church, assisted by Rev. Jos. Jennings.
