Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Oct. 1910. Strawberry Point column.
Van Alex Porter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Porter, was born at Strawberry point, Iowa, June 22nd, 1885, and died at Hawkeye, Iowa, October 14th, 1910. He received his early education in the public schools of his home town and took a course in dentistry at the State University in Iowa City, Iowa, from which institution he graduated in 1908.
After graduation he located in Hawkeye, Iowa, where he continued to practice for a little over two years. On October 27th, 1909, he was united in marriage to Etta Luella Burkhart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Burkhart, of Hawkeye, Iowa. About one month before his marriage the doctor had removed his office to Waterville, Iowa, to which place he took his bride, but after a short residence of but six months he was compelled to give up his practice, and they returned to the home of his wife's parents, at which place he died as above mentioned.
Diabetes, which was the immediate cause of death, first came into evidence about eighteen months ago, but he was enabled to carry on his practice for a year after that time. His suffering was borne with patience, none but himself knew the extent thereof for he bore it without murmuring. He leaves to mourn his loss his bride of but a year, his parents, two sisters, the Misses Madge and Lucy Porter, and a host of friends, not only in his home town, but in the town where he has since resided.
The funeral services were conducted from his parents' home in Strawberry Point, on Sunday, October 16th, and were in charge of Rev. William Galbreth, pastor of Methodist Episcopal church of Calmar, who also performed the marriage ceremony. Rev. O. M. vanSwearingen, pastor of the Strawberry Point Congregational church, assisted in the services. The services at the cemetery were in charge of the Masonic order, of which the deceased brother was a member. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved widow and grief stricken loved ones.
