Vernon William Walter was born June 14, 1935 to Irvin F and Evelyn (Tuecke) Walter at home on the Walter Farm near Guttenberg, Iowa. He passed away March 19, 2020 in Webb City, Missouri.
Vern received his elementary education at Jolly Ridge Country School and his high school diploma from Guttenberg High School. In later years he enrolled in college night classes.
Vern operated the family grain and livestock farm for many years. He received many awards related to farming. He was very involved in the Clayton County, Iowa and National Pork Producers Association.
Vern had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. He sang with the Keystone Barbershop Chorus, Elkader for many years and lent his talents to many weddings and funerals.
Vernon married Alice Jane Forrest in 1959 and they were married for 31 years. They had three children, Chris, JuliAnne and John.
Vern’s family hosted several International Rotary Exchange Students and enjoyed getting to know them and learn about their customs.
After leaving the farm, Vern lived in Cedar Falls, IA and Ames, IA.
Vern was a child of God. His Savior Jesus always came first in his life. He taught Sunday School and led Bible Studies for over sixty years. He also served as choir director for many years. Vern completed a two-year intensive study with Concordia University in St. Paul, MN and became a certified Deacon and Lay Minister in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He served at Trinity Lutheran in Perry, Iowa until his retirement in 2008.
Vern moved to Webb City, Missouri and began yet another career at Simpson Funeral Home.
Vern is survived by his children Chris (Chuck) Cornelius, Bellevue, IA; JuliAnne (John) Thomas, Jackson, WY and John (Teresa) Walter, Sumner, IA; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who were the light of his life: his sister Madeline (Doug) Borrett, Manchester, IA; and special friend, Eleanor McLemore, Webb City, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorene.
