MILLER, CRANDALL, CATTRON, ABBOTT

Sally Maria Miller was born January 2nd, 1810, near Auburn, Cayuga County, New York and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.W. Cattron, at Nora Springs, Iowa, Oct. 7th, 1909, at the ripe old age of 99 years, 9 months and [?] days.

When only a girl, she moved with her parents to Ontario Co. N.Y. where she resided until her marriage to John Bordeaux Crandall, which occurred on the 11th of May, 1836. To this union were born four children, two sons, Bradford M. and Orson L. and twin daughters Emily M. and Emma A.

In the spring of 1854 thinking the western climate might benefit the health of the husband and father, the little family formed a part of a band emigrating to the new country of Iowa and settled in the town then known as Yankee Settlement, now Edgewood. Out of the party consisting of six families no more than six persons are now living.

Together with the husband, who always tenderly protected and carred for her and his family, she bravely endured and overcame the hardships of the new country. They made Edgewood their home until the death of the husband in January 1873. From the fall of 1873 her home has been with her daughter, Mrs. Cattron most of the time, at Lawler, Iowa, but for the past nine years at Nora Springs.

She united with the M.E. church when eighteen years of age, but on coming to Iowa found no Methodist church near where they located, so joined another church and remained a consistent member until her death, always giving her services loyally until broken health prevented her active service. She was very frail and frequently had severe illnesses but not until August 1902, was she stricken with the illness from which she never fully recovered being confined to her bed constantly since February 1904. Hers was a remarkable life in that her faculties were all well preserved almost to the last. She wrote her last letter about two year ago and not until this summer was she compelled to give up her daily reading in her large print Testament -- always a source of much comfort to her. Until the last she had a vivid recollection of incidents of her life, especially those of her childhood and young womanhood.

During these long years that she was shut in she anxiously awaited her Master's summons but withall was very patient and all that a loving, sacrificing daughter could do for her was not left undone. Her strength gradually ebbed away through a generally breaking down of the vital powers until her Master's call, which came as a welcome summons to the tired body.

A short service was conducted at the home Saturday morning at nine o'clock and the remains were taken to Edgewood for interment beside her husband, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Cattron of Nora Springs, and Mrs. P.G. Abbott of Alpha, Ia. The son, Mr. Crandall of Greene was unable to go to Edgewood on account of his wife's illness.

She is survived by two children, Mrs. Cattron and O.L. Crandall; Emma and Bradford having preceeded her. She is also survived by a niece Mrs. P.G. Abbott, who lived with her from childhood until going to a home of her own and also by eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

She will be sorely missed, but we cannot mourn for her for we know she has entered the Haven of Rest, where she so often longed to be. The high esteem in which he long and useful life has been held is evidenced by the kind words and many beautiful floral offerings.
