John Hayes was born in Wexford county, Ireland, in 1829. At the age of twenty-one he journeyed to America, living in the states of Vermont and Pennsylvania. In the year 1859 he came wth the pioneers to Iowa and settled in Highland township. In 1862 he was married to Adelaide Fairburn and twelve children were born to them, all of whom, with his wife, survive him.
Mr. Hayes was one of the charter members of the Presbyterian church in Highland and in every way served this church faithfully for forty-five years, when he moved to Waterloo, where he lived at the time of his death.
Mr. Hayes was a man whom everyone liked, whatever he possessed was always at the disposal of those who sought help for the poor and needy. He was always generous in his donations to every charitable undertaking. He served eighteen years as Superintendent of the Highland Sunday School. The entire community sends out their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved children. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. the pall bearers were John Probert, Tom Duff, Will Probert, Richard Probert Robert Duff and John Kerr.
