Sisters Die Same Day at McGregor
Two widely known McGregor sisters died within five hours of each other Sunday night, Dec. 8, at the McGregor hospital. They were Dr. Alice May Clark Brooks, 85, and her sister, Miss Florence Clark, 83.

Dr. Brooks, with her father, the late H.H. Clark, founded the hospital in which she and her sister died.

Dr. Brooks died at 4 p.m. Sunday. She had been a patient in the hospital since last Tuesday.

Dr. Brooks, known affectionately in McGregor as "Dr. May," was born July 12, 1872, in McGregor. She was the daughter of Dr. H.H. Clark and Judith Baugh Clark. She was graduated from McGregor high school in 1890. Dr. Brooks was the only girl in the University of Iowa medical class of 1902.

She practiced medicine at McGregor from 1902 to 1925. She founded the McGregor hospital with her father in 1902. They sold the hospital to the late Dr. E.C. Meggers in 1924. Upon his retirement, it became a community hospital.

Dr. Brooks practiced until 1925 when she retired after the death of her father the same year. She delivered more than 1,000 babies during her medical career.

Her husband, Charles M. Brooks, died five years ago.

Survivors of both sisters include one sister, Ethel Bickel of Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Brooks is also survived by a stepson, Robert R. Brooks of McGregor.

Double funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Pilkington Funeral home in McGregor with Rev. W.O. Crosby, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.
