James, Harold 'Joe' 1933-2020

Harold “Joe” James, 87, of Monona, Iowa died Friday, February 7, 2020 in Edinburg, Texas.

Harold was born January 12, 1933 to Casper Glen and Flossie Marie (Oden) James in Middletown, Missouri. He was baptized and confirmed at Larrabee Methodist Church in Larrabee, Iowa.

Joe attended Kindergarten through twelfth grade in Larrabee, Iowa, earned his BA at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa and his MA at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He proudly joined and served in the United States Army from June 1954 to June 1956.

Joe was united in marriage with Bonnie Jean Hakeman on December 27, 1953 in Sutherland, Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union.

Throughout the years, Joe worked as a Teacher and Guidance Counselor as well as the owner of Bruns and James Insurance in Monona, Iowa. He was a member of the Iowa Guidance Association, Kiwanis, Masons, Iowa Independent Insurance Association and Living Faith United Methodist Parish. Joe was also on the Boards of Directors for Farmers Mutual of Garnavillo.

Joe is survived by his wife, Bonnie James of Monona, Iowa; daughters, Peggy (Dale) Greimann of Pawleys Island, South Carolina and Brenda (Greg) James of West Union, Iowa; four granddaughters, Jaclyn Greimann of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Leslie (Adam) Schulte of Omaha, Nebraska, Katie (Wayne) Slake of Dike, Iowa and Sarah (Chris) Miller of Waverly, Iowa; six great-grandchildren; and his sisters-in-law, Joyce Hakeman and Rebecca James.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Flossie James; brother, Donald G. James; brothers-in-law, Harold Hakeman, Rodney Hakeman and Glen Hakeman; and two sisters-in-law, Faye Hakeman and Pauline Hakeman.

A Family Graveside Service is planned for a later date.
