Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 24 Dec. 1914. Strawberry Point column.
William B. Manchester was born in Providence, New York, Nov. 13th, 1831, and died in Putnam township, Iowa, at the advanced age of 83 years and 27 days. Mr. Manchester grew to manhood in New York, then came west to Illinois, where he lived with his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. E. Pettit. In 1859 he came to Iowa, but returned to Henry, Ill., for his bride, Mary A. Rowe, whom he married July 4th, 1862. They made the journey back to Iowa by team and located on a farm in Putnam township, living for six years in a log cabin. As more prosperous days came, a more commodious house was built. Mrs. Manchester was called to the Home Above March 30th, 1911. The husband remained at the old home with his daughter, Mrs. James Chapman, until April of this year, when he came to live with his other daughter, Mrs. Fred Talcott. He leaves to mourn his loss five children, William, Ellsworth, Harriett, Mary Ella and Charles, who all live near the old home and were at his bedside the last few hours and did all that loving hearts and willing hands could do. Besides the five children, he leaves twelve grandchildren, one sister in New York, a brother in California and other relatives and numerous friends. He is gone but the influence of his good life will long be felt in the community where he lived so many years. The funeral services were held Saturday at the Fred Talcott home, conducted by Rev. Barton, of Arlington. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
