Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 03 Dec. 1914.
Mrs. Sidney Powell passed away Monday morning, November 30th, at nine o'clock, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. V. Jack, of this place. Mrs. Powell was first stricken with apoplexy a few weeks ago but recovered from its effects to a large extent. Another stroke Monday morning brought death almost instantly.
Letitia A. Farnsworth was born in Concord, Mass., December 21st, 1836, and was married to Sidney Powell November 29th, 1855, at the home of her father, at Roxbury, Mass.
Mr. and Mrs. Powell came to Elkader March 12th, 1856, remaining here a few weeks and then going to West Mitchell, Iowa. March 10th, 1858, they returned to Elkader and this has been her home ever since. Mr. Powell preceded her to the "Great Beyond" on January 27th, 1908.
Besides Mrs. Jack, one son, John Powell; three grandchildren, the Misses Eva and June Jack, and Mr. Sidney Powell, and three sisters, living in Massachusetts, are left to mourn her death.
Mrs. Powell was a loving mother, a good neighbor, a true friend - one of the word's best type of women. Staunch-hearted and steadfast throughout the trials of life; kind hearted and charitable to those whom she came in contact with, she has gone to her reward but her memory lives in the hearts of those who knew her.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack, Rev. Isaac Cassell officiating. The pall bearers were: H. D. Brown, Wm. Becker, J. G. Hempel, V. T. Price, A. J. Carpenter and H. L. Griffith, four of whom performed a similar service for Mr. Powell.
