Mrs. Chas. Teesdale, of Stickney, S. D. writes us under date of Jan. 25, 1921 as follows: “I have an item for your to publish in your paper that will be of interest to the older residents of Guttenberg. Mrs. Carl Tewes, of Twin Falls, Minn., passed away a short time ago at the home of her grand daughter, the cause of her death being old age. She had attained the ripe old age of 99 years and 3 months. At one time, during the 60s, she lived in Guttenberg, Iowa, where her husband, Carl Tewes, Sr., was employed in Ihm’s warehouse, and later at the mason trade. Of late years Mrs. Tewes made her home with her grand daughter, Mrs. Augusta Kuckenbecker, first living on a farm near Mt. Vernon, S. D., and later at their present home in Minnesota. Those left to mourn her death are one son, Carl Tewes, one daughter, Mrs. Mattie Bartling, and one grand daughter, Mrs. Kuckenbecker, besides a host of friends.

[NOTE: This item almost certainly refers to Mary (or Maria) Tewes, nee Rademacher, who was married to Henry (or Heinrich Tewes) and was living in Guttenberg in 1860 and 1870. In 1880 they were living in Plymouth Co., Iowa. In 1870 and 1880, their daughter Augusta was living with them along with their son Charles. In 1880, Henry and Martha Bartling lived next door to them.]

[In 1900, Mary Tewes was living with Frederick Kuchenbecker in Township 100, Range 58, Hutchinson Co., SD. She is identified as his mother-in-law, born Sept. 1826. He is a widower, born in Germany in Apr. 1853. Mary Tewes came to the U. S. in 1854; Frederick Kuchenbecker in 1881. Next door are Lewis Rademacher (born June 1872 in Iowa) and Walter Rademacher (born Aug. 1877 in Iowa), brothers; Lewis is married to Caroline, born Sept. 1871 in Russia.]

[In 1920, Mary Tewes was living with Otto and Minnie Kuchenbecker in Grant Co., Minnesota. She was identified as a “boarder,” age 97 years, year of immigration: 1857. Fred Kuchenbecker is also living in this household, identified as a “cousin.”]

[NOTE: The Minnesota Death Certificate Index lists Mary Tewes of Grant Co., MN, who died 28 Apr. 1920.]
