Mrs. John J. Hennessey died at her home on the 4th inst. Mrs. Hennessy, nee Anna Cullen, was born August 15, 1845, at Drumore, Sligo County, Ireland. She came to this country in 1856 and on Dec. 2nd, 1866, was united in the bonds of matrimony to J. J. Hennessy, in New York City. To this union nine children were born, four of whom died when young. She is survived by her husband, her daughter Annie, and her four sons, John J., Martin J., both residing near this city, Edward, of Des Moines, and Dr. Felix, of Calmar; and by one brother, Thomas Cullen, of Colesburg, Iowa. Mrs. Hennessy died unexpectedly. On Saturday morning she complained of a slight indisposition, and the present members of her family thought her suffering from an attack of gastralgia, with which she was troubled for some years. At 4 p.m. Annie went to her bedside, as she had done repeatedly during the day, to find that God had called her mother to the world beyond. The funeral was held on Monday morning from St. Mary's Catholic Church, of which she was a lifelong member. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Dunn and daughter Mae and son Ray, of West Union; Mr. and Mrs. John Corkery, Patrick and Margaret Toomey, of Wadena; John Reiley and daughter, of Ryan; Miss Mayme Cowley, of Des Moines; Mrs. Martin Culligan, of Masonville; Mrs. Joseph Thurn, of Manchester; and Miss Mary Lang, of Dubuque.
(Note: The Hennessy/Hennessey surname was spelled both ways in the article, as shown here.)
