Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 16 Jul. 1914.

Herman John Bunting was born Dec. 20th, 1878, at Demnitz, Germany. When five years of age he came with his parents to this country. They made Clayton Center, Clayton County, Iowa, their first home. After some years the family moved on a farm in Boardman township, where Herman assisted his parents in the manifold duties of farm life.

Nov. 29th, 1905, he was united in marriage to Miss May Ann Feller. Three children, two boys and one girl, were born to this union. Even after his marriage he stayed on the home farm to help his father, while his faithful wife was a great assistance to the aged mother.

About ten years ago he was operated on in a La Crosse Hospital for appendicitis and stomach trouble. Although he was relieved some, he never regained the vigor and strength he wished for, and was finally compelled to give up the farm work and three years ago moved to Elkader. The aged parents came with him and both families have made many friends since their coming.

Although Mr. Bunting could now take life somewhat easier, his bodily ailment did not change for the better. After all recourses had been exhausted he decided to go to Prairie du Chien. There the doctors found that another operation was necessary. The same was performed June 22nd, but then it was seen that the length of his life was but a question of days or a few weeks. July 3rd he was brought home, as he wished to be with his beloved ones. The best of care was given him by his wife, parents and friends, to make his last days and hours on earth as comfortable as possible. He himself search for and found strength in prayer and Holy Communion. He was relieved of all earthly sufferings on Saturday, July 11th, at 4 o'clock in the morning, at the age of 35 years, 6 months and 21 days.

His departure is mourned by his grief stricken wife and life's companion, with her little children, Mildred, Arthur and Valmah, aged six, three and one year, respectively; the aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bunting; two brothers and two sisters, viz: Carl, of Nunica, Mich.; William, of Boardman township; Mrs. Emilie Strong and Mrs. Mathilda Feller, of Fayette county. One sister, Anna, died sixteen years ago, and another, Mrs. Marie Coates, in December of last year. He will also be missed by the many who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Franke on Monday afternoon at the house and church. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
