DIED

At Garnavillo, Clayton County, Ia,
July 27th, 1876, Hon. Wm. Thoma
in the 49th year of his age.

The deceased was born in Weisenstadt, Bavaria, on the 16th day of December, 1827. He came to America in the year 1852, when he was 25 years of age, making his way directly to this county, and, for the twenty-four years intervening, up to the time of his death, has been counted among Clayton County’s best and most public spirited citizens. During a large share of this period, He has resided in Garnavillo, and has stood foremost among the good citizens of that village.

One year ago last fall he was nominated and elected by the Republicans a member of the county Board of Supervisors and has discharged his duties with great acceptability up to the time of his death. Clayton county loses by his untimely death as good as a citizen as she ever counted among her population. The tax-payers lose a most excellent and upright officer, and his own village loses a citizen whom it was equally a pleasure and honor to name as a friend.

He leaves a wife and eleven children in grief at his loss; also a father, two brothers and five sisters, all well-known residents of this county. To these bereaved friends are earnest sympathy goes out, and it will be a sufficient eulogy for the deceased, to desire that, when our turn comes to go beyond the cold portals of the grave with the implacable subdue of all humanity, we may leave behind us as pure and honorable a record as might truly be made the epitaph of the late William Thoma.
