Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 04 Jun. 1914. Guttenberg column.
Thursday morning at 8:27 o'clock, at the home of his father, John Soltau, in this city, occurred the death of Rudolf Soltau, after suffering almost three weeks with peritonitis and appendicitis. Deceased was born at Guttenberg, Ia., on Oct. 4, 1898, and therefore was 15 years, 7 months and 24 days of age at the time of his death. On May 13th he was operated on for peritonitis and appendicitis and seemed to be doing well, giving his relatives and friends strong hopes for his recovery, but on Tuesday blood-poisoning set in, and all hopes for recovery had to be given up. All that medical knowledge could suggest and loving hands could do to ward off death, was done for him, but all to no avail. Never once did he complain, but always had hopes. He was a young man who was loved by his schoolmates and all in this city, as he was a kind and true son, brother and friend, always ready with heart and hand to do kind acts for others, and his many kind acts won him many friends. His untimely death is deeply mourned by his father, three brothers, Hugo J. Soltau, of Seattle, Wash.; Hugo J. Harberg, of Garnavillo; and Arthur Harberg, of New York; three sisters, Mrs. L. C. Muschewske, Mrs. C. F. Compton, of Guttenberg, and Mrs. O. H. Tangeman, of Dubuque, and a large circle of relatives and friends. He will be sadly missed in the home and by his relatives and friends. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Soltau home. Interment in the City Cemetery.
