Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 28 May 1914. Iowa News columns.
The badly decomposed body of Herman Gender, a hermit, who had lived on an island in the Mississippi river, several miles up the river from Guttenberg, was found in his shack Sunday by a party of fishermen, who happened to pass there. Gender was last seen alive when he visited Guttenberg about two weeks ago. From the condition of the body it is believed he was dead over a week before the body was found. Coroner Zearley took charge of the body. Gender had lived the life of a hermit on the island for the past fifteen years. Nobody knew where he came from as he always refrained from talking about his past. So far as known he has no relatives. He was about 70 years old and eked out an existence by fishing and trapping.
