OBITUARY.
MRS. RUFUS RICHARDSON
Eliza Durkee was born in Stockbridge, Vt., Feb. 20, 1821, and died at the home of her eldest daughter, Mrs. C. N Goddard, in this city, in the early morning of July 1st, 1902.
Her grandfather in his early life became a first settler in Vermont, and she in turn was a pioneer in the settlement of northeastern Iowa.
July 21st, 1840, she married Rufus Richardson, and for fifteen years their residence was in Sherburne, Vt. In 1855 they came west and spent the winter in Illinois, coming into Iowa the following spring. They halted in Monona until a spot that suited them was selected in Wagner township, in Clayton county. In this farm home they began the life so famil{i}ar to Iowa pioneers and pursued it until 1874 when the family removed to Elkader. Death broke in upon them in 1892 and took the head of the family. A few years later Mrs. Richardson came to Decorah to live with her daughter, but devoted the summers to visits with her youngest daughter in South Dakota.
Four children were born to them. One daughter died in early childhood. The survivors are Mrs. Goddard, Mrs. Caddie Davis of Hitchcock, S. D., and Ross Richardson of Elkader. Death resulted from a form of Bright’s disease after an illness of three months’ duration. Funeral services will take place this morning at the family home, Dr. Willett officiating, and the remains will be taken for burial to the little neighborhood cemetery near the early Iowa home, wherein the remains of the husband and father are resting.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in the Eno Cemetery in Clayton County
