Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 23 Apr. 1914. Littleport column.

Fred R. Reichart.

Grandpa Reichart, as he was familiarly know hereabouts, died at his home early Wednesday morning from a complication of diseases, incident to old age, after an illness of six weeks duration, during which time he was confined to his bed.

During this illness everything that loving hands and kind hearts, together with medical skill, could suggest was done and perhaps due to this his life was briefly extended and the grim destroyer put off for a short time. Hopes were at first entertained that he would rally and gradually grow better but as time elapsed and the Angel of Death hovered near, these hopes gave way to patient waiting until the hour should come when the storm tossed spirit should take its flight and find peace with the All-wise Creator, who gave it long years ago.

Mr. Reichart was born on May 27th, 1830, In Saxony, Germany, and came to America in 1850 at the age of twenty years. He landed at New York City and from there came to Milwaukee, where he found employment for about a year. He then started west and came to Littleport about the year 1852 and has since that time made his home. He thus became one of the oldest settlers in this vicinity and has watched the community grow from a wilderness to its present settled condition.

On Sept. 1st, 1861, he married Marie Dahling, who survives him and who through all these long years has been near his side through all the trials and vicissitudes of life and who was a patient helpmate in his recent illness and a comforter when the end came. To this union twelve children were born, eight of whom are living, the other four having died during their childhood. Those living are Augusta Romig, Louise Christ, Ida Czizek, Clara Newmeister, all residing in Dubuque; Mary Koehn, who lives near Elkader, and the boys, William, Henry and Charles, all residing at Littleport. All these visited him during his sickness and were present at the funeral which was held at the Lutheran church Saturday noon. Rev. Foelsch, of Elkport, conducted the services and after a prayer at the house the funeral repaired to the church, where Mr. Foelsch preached a beautiful sermon. He was ably assisted by Mrs. Foelsch and Miss Balls, who sang, and Mrs. Beck, who presided at the organ. The funeral party then wended its way to the Union cemetery, south of town, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and old acquaintances, who had gathered to pay their last respects to their old friend and neighbor. The floral offerings were beautiful beyond description and among the prettiest and most profuse we have ever seen.

Thus has another life been closed and those nearest and dearest to him will be indeed the ones who will miss his greeting, his kindly smile and who will bide the time to the brighter day.
