On Saturday evening at 10 o'clock, at his home in Jefferson township, occurred the death of John Powers, after a several weeks illness. Deceased was born in Canada on May 26th, 1866, and therefore was 47 years, 9 months and 11 days of age at the time of his death. In the year 1877 he came to the United States, settling at Guttenberg, Iowa. On February 24, 1892, he was united in marriage at St. Michaels Catholic church at Ceres to Miss Anna K. Kann. The family resided at Guttenberg for a number of years, deceased holding a position here as section foreman for the C. M. & St. P. R.R. Co. Three years ago the family moved onto a farm in Jefferson township, where deceased lived until his death. He was an ambitious man throughout his entire life, and was a kind and true husband, father and friend. He leaves to mourn his untimely death his widow, four daughters, Olive, Alma, Geneveve and Helen; two sons, Edward and William, all at home; two brothers, James, of North McGregor, and Thomas, of La Crosse, Wis.; one sister, in Omaha, Nebr., and a large circle of relatives and friends by whom he will sadly be missed. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city on Wednesday morning, Rev. Father J. H. Brinkman officiating. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery.
