DIED - In Monona, at 6 a.m. March 24th, 1902, Mrs. Maria Barbara Seitz Rupp, aged 79 years, 9 months and 18 days.
Mrs. Rupp was born at Unterntief, Bavaria Germany, June 6th, 1822. In infancy she was dedicated to the Lord by Holy Baptism, and after attending school and receiving religious instructions from her 6th to 14th year, she was confirmed after the order of the Lutheran church and admitted to the Lord's Supper.
With her parents, in 1839, she emigrated to the United States and settled in Dearborn county, Indiana. On the 6th of April, 1844, she was united in marriage to John George Rupp.
To this union eight children were born, one son and seven daughters; two of the daughters died in 1864, and the eldest daughter, Mrs. Shepard, died at Postville some years ago.
In 1850 the family came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Giard township, this county, where they experienced all the hardships attending the life of the early pioneers. The husband and father died May 7th, 1870, and Mrs. Rupp, with her family moved to Monona, which has since been her home.
On the 11th of January she was taken seriously ill with inflamation of the bronchial tubes and pleurisy. This was in a degree overcome. Age told on her constitution, medical skill and the best of nursing proved of no avail, the Lord claimed her with the dawn of the morning she closed her life in everlasting peaceful sleep from which there is no wakening. Through all her sickness she was patient and brave, she confided herself entirely and wholly into the hands of her beloved Savior.
She leaves to mourn her death, one son and four daughters, 20 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two brothers and two sisters. The light has closed upon a christian life, a good woman, a mother devoted to her family, a sister in love and veneration.
The funeral was held on Wednesday at the Lutheran church, of which she was a devoted member, Rev. Graening officiated. Burial in Monona cemetery beside the husband who has preceeded her over thirty years ago.
