Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 19 Mar. 1914. Guttenberg column.
John Ernst Henry Biesterfeldt died at the home of his sister, Mrs. John F. Duncker and husband, north of this city, on Monday morning, March 9th, at 9 o'clock, at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 22 days, the cause of his death being old age and a complication of diseases. Deceased was born at Ottensen, near Hamburg, in Germany, on April 17, 1836, and was married there. His wife died in Germany. He came to America about 33 years ago, and of late years has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Duncker. He was a carpenter by trade and was a kind and true man, his kind disposition winning him many friends. His death is mourned by four daughters and one son, all married in Germany; one sister, Mrs. John F. Duncker, of Guttenberg; two brothers in Hamburg, Germany, and a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon and interment was made in the city cemetery. Charles Fuerste officiated at the Funeral.
(Note: WPA records give his death year as 1915, as does his gravestone photo on the IGPP, both errors, as the obit in this newspaper shows. His gravestone spells his surname as Biesterfeld, and is in Guttenberg City cemetery. The gravestone photo is also that of John F. Duncker and his wife.)
