_______

OLD RESIDENT OF THE CITY
_______

Deceased Has Been an Invalid the Past Few Months Owing to a Partial Stroke of Paralysis

Sunday morning at 9:30 o’clock occurred the death of one of Guttenberg’s best known and most highly respected citizens, William H. Heine. Death came not unexpectedly, as he had been steadily failing for a week previous.

Deceased was a native of Pennsylvania and was born at Waynesburg, that state, Nov. 17, 1855, and was therefore at the time of death aged 50 years, 11 months and 17 days. When he was six months of age his parents, Leonard and Margaret Heine, came west and settled at Guttenberg, where deceased grew to manhood. After graduating from the Guttenberg high school he began the study of drugs. he attended Northwestern College, Chicago, from which he graduated with high honors. Upon leaving college he returned to Guttenberg and engaged in the drug business and later moved to Garnavillo where he remained three years engaged in the same business.

He was married Oct. 6, 1878, to Emma Tiede and to them three children were born, two daughters and one son, namely Etta, now Mrs. B. R. Conley, and Leona, now Mrs. W. C. Irwin, both of whom reside in Chicago, and Raymond, the son, at home.

After conducting a drugstore in Guttenberg for nearly twenty years he removed with his family to Chicago where he continued in the business and after remaining there on year, again returned to Guttenberg, which was in 1903, and opened a drugstore in the Kohler building, now occupied by John Purnhage as a jewelry store. After a few months there he moved his stock into the Sullivan store building on Front street where he had since been located.

Mr. Heine’s illness dates back several months, and was caused by a partial stroke of paralysis, which he suffered while visiting relatives in Chicago, and since then up to the time of his death has been constantly confined to his bed and his condition at no time offered very strong hopes for his ultimate recovery. A week previous to his demise he suffered another slight stroke and from then on his failure was quite pronounced.

Deceased was a prominent and valued member of the local lodges of the I. O. O. F. and Brotherhood of American Yeomen and was also a member of the Guttenberg Social Turnverein. Mr. Heine was always a foremost and consistent worker in the lodges of which he was a member and filled numerous offices of importance at various times.

Surviving a beloved husband, father and brother are his widow, the three children, Mesdames B. R. Conley and W. C. Irwin and Raymond and his brothers Henry H. and Otto C. Heine and sister, Mrs. Sophia Eckart. Besides his two daughters the two brothers and sister are also residents of Chicago, and all of whom were present at the funeral. Others from abroad were Emil Tiede and wife, Belmond; Mrs. Sophia Bloedel, McGregor; Mrs. Mutschler, Dubuque; Mrs. Anna Beck and daughter Jennie and son Ed, of Elkport, and Mrs. Mary Hoerner of Dubuque.

The funeral took place from the late residence Wednesday at 2:00 o’clock p. m., and was conducted under the auspices of the I. O. O. F., Rebekah and B. A. Y. lodges. Interment was made in the City cemetery.
