Stroke Fatal to Richard Hayden, Pioneer of County
_______Richard Hayden, aged 88, a pioneer of Clayton county, died Thursday morning at seven o’clock after an illness of many years, which culminated in a stroke of paralysis a few hours before his death. He was buried Saturday morning in St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery at Garnavillo following requiem mass at St. Mary’s church in Guttenberg. Rev. J. A. Dupont of St. Mary’s church officiated at the church and grave.
Mr. Hayden was born in Cold Springs, N. Y., on July 20, 1846, and when but four years old came with his parents to Iowa, making the long trip by stage, barge and covered wagon in company with other western settlers. The family stopped off near Clayton and there he grew to young manhood, helping his parents on the home farm. On July 10, 1888, he was married to Miss Frances Wulfekuhl at Guttenberg and continued to farm, with his wife, for the next twenty years. They then moved to Guttenberg where they have made their home. Mr. Hayden lost his eyesight some years ago.
He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Fannie Longbothom of Chicago and one son, Raymond of Minneapolis. There are also two grandchildren and several step-brothers and sisters.
Mr. Hayden was a devout member of St. Mary’s church, performing the duties of his religion steadfastly, despite his great affliction. The family have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
