Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 19 Feb. 1914. Elkport and Vicinity column.
The remains of Mrs. S. J. Soyster, one of the pioneer settlers of this vicinity, were brought here Tuesday for burial.
Mrs. Soyster was born at Kane, Ill., March 16, 1832, and moved to Clayton, Iowa, in 1856. Two years later, on April 5th, 1858, she was united in marriage to Soloman J. Soyster and a few years later they moved to Elkport, Iowa, where Mr. Soyster engaged in the mercantile business, and after continuing in business for a number of years, they decided to move to Quimby, Iowa, at which place they made their home until six years ago, when Mr. Soyster passed away. This left her all alone and she became very lonesome and had decided to spend most of her time with her children. It was while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Mary Dressellings, of Wagner, S.D., that the time of her departure from this earth had come, and on Feb, 14th, 1914, she passed away. Mrs. Soyster was a very kind hearted, industrious woman, a good neighbor and citizen and one who was always ready to help those in distress. She leaves to mourn her loss four children, Clara A Simmons, of Cripple Creek, Colo.; Chas. L. Soyster, of Los Angeles, Calif.; George E. Soyster, of Chicago, Ill.; and Mary C. Dressellings, of Wagner, S.D. One daughter, Libby, died in 1877, at the age of twelve years. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Opera House, Rev. Foelsch officiating and the remains were laid to rest beside her husband and daughter in the Mt. Harmony cemetery.
(Note: WPA records show Nancy Enslow Soyster, 1832 - 14 Feb. 1914, as buried in Mt. Harmony cemetery.)
