Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 26 Nov. 1908.
Miss Ann Thoday was born February 19th, 1828, in Willingham, Cambridgeshire, England, and departed this life near Volga, November 23rd, thus bringing her earthly life to the ripe age of eighty years, nine months and four days. "Aunt Ann", as she was familiarly and lovingly known among us, was everyone's friend. Never was she asked to help the needy but that she did and did it willingly. October 8th, 1846, she was married in the Church of England to James Ambrose. They came to America in the spring of 1851 and resided in Lockport, N.Y., until April 21, 1854, when they came to Volga City, in and near which she resided until her death at the home farm. After the death of her husband, Jas. Ambrose, she was again united in marriage to Mr. Wallace Goodwin March 31, 1858, who preceded her to the better world nearly fourteen years ago. Mrs. Goodwin was converted July 17, 1853, and united with the Baptist church of which she has ever remained a faithful, consistent member. She has proven by her life her strong faith in her Heavenly Father. During her last illness of a year's duration, she was ready and anxiously awaiting the summons to go home. She leaves two sons, Frank and Herbert, by her first marriage, and one daughter, Mrs. Ed Boyer, of Arlington, by her second marriage, besides relatives and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. The entire community feel the sorrow in our loss. She has been a benediction to many in sorrow and trouble and shared with many in their joys. She leaves a legacy worth more than anything - a good name. The sorrowing relatives may well consider themselves rich - rich in the highest and best sense of the word. The funeral services were held at the house Wednesday, Nov. 25th, at one o'clock. Rev. Holden, of Strawberry Point, officiated.
