Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 19 Nov. 1908. Elkport and Vicinity column.
George Hansel, aged about sixty-five years, an old and highly respected citizen of Mallory township, took sick while in Guttenberg last Thursday and died the following night, being too sick to be taken home. Mr. Hansel was born and raised near where he lived at the time of his death, and consequently had a very large circle of friends and acquaintances, who were shocked to learn of his sudden demise, but those who knew him intimately knew that he was in poor health for a long time before he passed away. Mr. Hansel leaves a widow and six sons, viz: John, Ira, Japin, Realto, Dyer and Jesse, and the married daughters, Mesdames Hanneman, Michael and Grey, to mourn his death. Mr. Hansel was one of our most successful farmers financially, and has left a large estate to be divided among his heirs. He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge of Elkport and was laid to rest Tuesday morning, under the auspices of that order, in the Hansel cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 19 Nov. 1908. Garber column.
This community was shocked when they learned that Geo. Hansel, who had gone to Guttenberg on business, was taken suddenly ill and after a few days illness, death relieved him of his sufferings. He died at Friedlein's hotel early Saturday morning. All the medical aid was unavailing. George was born in Maryland September 2nd, 1842, being, at the time of his death, 66 years, 2 months and 12 days old. He leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. J. D. Milne, of Fredericksburg, and three brothers, John W., Jacob and Strother, all of whom live reside at Garber. He leaves besides, his widow, Mary E., and nine children, three daughters, Mrs. Matilda Hannamann, Mrs. Jane Gray and Mrs. Jennie Michael, of Almoral, and six sons, Japin, Realto and G. W., on the home place, Ira, Jess and John H., all of whom live near the old home. George was a good man and was well beloved by his neighbors. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Elkport and was buried by that order. Rev. Hirsch, of Fairview, delivered the sermon at the residence. There was a large concourse of people present to pay their last respects to the dead.
