John Minger, beloved husband and father, was born in Mulche County, Canton Bern, Switzerland, on Sept. 7th, 1827, and died at his home in Millville township on August 25th, at 10:30 o'clock, aged 80 years, 11 months and 18 days.
Mr. Minger spent the early years of his life in Switzerland, and at the age of 18 years, he, with his parents, migrated to America, where they settled in Tuscarawas county, Ohio. On April 27th, 1854, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Hassig. To them were born fourteen children, three of whom preceded him to that great beyond and those living are: John William Minger, Mrs. J. W. Brown, George R. Minger, Henry B. Minger, Mrs. W. A. White, Mrs. John Smith, Charles E. Minger, Frank A. Minger, Mrs. Ed Kenyon and Albert R. Minger, all of Clayton county, and Mrs. Frank Kappen of Canton, S.D.
In 1855 he, with his wife, moved to Clayton county, Iowa, on a small farm near Millville, where he resided until the time of his death.
Four years ago last April Mr. and Mrs. Minger celebrated their golden wedding, they being married fifty years at that time.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Massan Lutheran church at Massan, Canton Bern, Switzerland. His faith was firm and steadfast in his church, until of later years he claimed the United Bethern church. He was a kind and loving husband, a good father, citizen and neighbor, and was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held at his home on Saturday, Aug. 29th, at 10 o'clock, and conducted by Rev. A. E. Hursh. Interment in the Dittmer cemetery.
He leaves to mourn his departure a kind and loving wife, an only brother and eleven children, besides a host of relatives and friends.
Death our dearest ties can sever,
Take our loved ones from our side;
Bear them from our homes forever,
O'er the dark, cold water's tide.
In that happy land we'll meet them
With those loved and gone before,
And again with joy we'll greet them
There where parting is no more.
