Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 03 Sept. 1908.

At her home in Elkader, Monday afternoon, Aug. 31st, occurred the death of Mrs. Geo. Herterich, after a short illness.

Sunday morning she was found by neighbors on her kitchen floor unconscious, having suffered a stroke of paralysis. Medical assistance was at once summoned, but she never regained consciousness and passed away Monday afternoon.

Caroline Kohlascheck was born July 1, 1832, in Germany. She came to New York when a young girl, where she suffered many privations, but finally was enabled enough to save enough to help her parents and brother to come to the country. She first married a Mr. Wegeiner, who died, and then in 1860 married George Herterich. They came to Elkader in 1871 where Mr. Herterich died several years ago.

Deceased, while peculiar in some things, was a very kind hearted woman. She made a practice of keeping grain and had a place in her yard to feed birds, and each day she bought meat to feed the starved cats that came to her house. She gave liberally to church and other charities, many times unknown to anybody but those who received it.

She is survived by one brother, Chas. Kohlascheck, of Plankington, S.D., and three nieces, one of whom is Mrs. J. B. Johnson, of Doon, Iowa.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, services being held at the Congregational church, conducted by Revs. Dickey and Franks. They were attended by many old friends of the family.

Added by S. Ferrall 9/9/2020:

Mrs. Herterich, the aged widow of Geo Herterich, deceased, was found in an unconscious condition in one of the rooms of her home on Sunday morning by Mrs. R. Gmelin, who called to leave her milk. Help was immediately summoned but to no avail, and she passed away Monday evening at about six o'clock. We are without further particulars.
