Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 Aug. 1908.

Mary Alice Flenniken Hammond, daughter of R. B. and Margaret Flenniken, was born Nov. 28th, 1859, near Colesburg, in Clayton county, and died at her old home near Colesburg August 4th, 1908, aged 49 years, 5 months and 6 days. Sister Hammond spent her early life with her parents at home. At the age of twenty-two she was united in marriage with O. D. Hammond, Dec. 15, 1881, in Clayton county, and to this union one son was born. At the age of 13 years she gave her heart to God and united with the Congregational church, of which she was a faithful member for twenty-four years, and about twelve years ago she, with her husband, attended a camp meeting held at the Mound by the United Brethren in Christ, where they rededicated their hearts and lives to God and united with the U.B. church, of which she remained a faithful member until death. Truly Sister Hammond was one of God's chosen ones and in her death the church has sustained a great loss. She was always ready to help in every time of need, but our loss is her gain. A splendid life and a noble spirit was hers. Sister Hammond was also a member of the Rebekah lodge No. 428, at Colesburg. She was a member of the staff at her death and was a great worker for the order, and all that she did she did well, and she will be greatly missed by the order.

The funeral was held at her late home Aug. 6th, 1908, at 2:00 pm, conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. E. Hursh, assisted by the Rebekah lodges of Colesburg, Osterdock and Elkport. Many and beautiful were the floral tributes.

Sister Hammond was sick a long time, but bore it all with great patience and exhorted all at her bedside to meet her in Heaven. Often she said to her pastor, "I will soon be there." Her greatest care was for her aged parents, whom she felt needed her care, but she committed them to the care of kind friends and her Heavenly Father. She often spoke of her only son, "He is all the boy I have and I want him to meet me in Heaven," and of her husband, "He has been so good to me he has never left me in my sickness." All that money, skill and loving hands could do was done for her, but death claimed its own.

She leaves to mourn her loss her aged parents, her brother Frank, a kind loving husband and an only son, besides a host of relatives, friends and neighbors. Interment was made at Brown's cemetery. She sleeps in peace.

Yes faith beholds where she sits
With Jesus, clothed in white.
Our loss is her eternal gain
She dwells in endless light.

Rev. A. E. Hursh
