Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 30 Jan. 1908.

At his home in Elkader at about 3:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, Jan. 27th, 1908, occurred the death of Sidney Powell, after an illness of one week, of pluro-pneumonia, at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 4 days. He sank peacefully to sleep.

Sidney Powell was born at Milton, Chittenden county, Vt., Dec. 23rd, 1830, the son of Sidney and Chloe Washburn Powell. At the age of 19, in 1849, he, with others, made the perilous journey to California, being six months on the water. After a stay of three years he returned to Vermont, where he passed the winter. In the spring of 1855 he went to Waltham, Mass., where he resided until March, 1856.

On Nov. 2_th (looks like 20, 28, or 29), 1855, he was united in marriage to Letitia A. Farnsworth, at Roxbury, Mass.

Mr. and Mrs. Powell came to Elkader March 12th, 1856, but remained only six weeks, when they journeyed to West Michell, Iowa, where he worked at the carpenter trade.

On Nov. 9th, 18__, they returned to Elkader, where they have since lived. Two children were born to them, John _. Powell (initial looks like C, O, or U) and Grace, wife of S. V. Jack, these, with the devoted wife and three grandchildren, sincerely mourn his departure.

Mr. Powell was a man of strong convictions and did not hesitate to state them. He mas many friends and neighbors who will regret that he has passed away to the "Great Beyond."

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from his late residence, Rev. J. G. Dickey officiating.

A. E. Whitney, V. T. Price, J. G. Hempel, A. J. Carpenter, D. G. Griffith and H. L. Griffith served as pall bearers.
