Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 16 Jan. 1908. Local News column.

Jacob C. Heilman (sic), the father of Mrs. H. D. Brown, of this place, died last evening at his home in Mendon township, after an illness of several months. Owing to the illness of Mr. Brown, who has been confined to his bed since Monday, Mrs. Brown has not been able to go to her old home today.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 23 Jan. 1908.

John J. Heilmann was born Sept. 18, 1839, at Oelbrunn, Germany. At the age of eleven years he came to this country, settling at Zanesville, Ohio. About three years later the family removed to Clayton county, where Mr. Heilman resided ever since.

On March 22, 1863, he was united in marriage to Louise Katherine Schlund. Mr. Heilmann was known as a peace loving man. He was a good neighbor and always willing to help where he could. To his wife he was a loving husband, to his children a kind father and wise counselor.

Being of a quiet disposition his Christian life was without any great demonstration. He was a member of the German M.E. church at Giard for over thirty years and rejoiced to see it prevail.

About Thanksgiving day symptoms of illness began to develop in his seemingly rugged constitution. After a while he had to take to bed and for over six weeks he was a patient sufferer. The end came for him peacefully on January 15, 1908, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 27 days. During his illness he received the best of care by his beloved wife, his children and their families.

He is the first taken from a happy family circle and leaves to mourn his loss the wife, two daughters, Mrs. H. D. Brown, of Elkader, and Mrs. C. H. Wiegand, of Mendon twp., John, at home, and Henry, of Ft. Dodge, besides three grandchildren and three sisters. He is gone from the home circle but his memory will be fondly cherished.

Funeral services were conducted at the house on Sunday afternoon by Rev. F. O. Barz. A large concourse of friends were present. Interment took place at Pleasant Grove cemetery at McGregor. John Hartwick, C. J. Niell, Wm. Allert, Chas. Washburn, C. Luckermann and Herman Allert, Sr., acted as pall bearers.

(Note: The surname Heilman / Heilmann appeared in the obit as presented here.)
