Clayton County Register, Thur., 13 Oct. 1927.

Thomas Smith, son of Isaiah and Susan Smith, was born in Lockport, New York, November 17, 1840, and passed from this life at the home of his son, Ernest, October 7, 1927, being 86 years, 10 months and 20 days of age.

When Thomas was fourteen the family decided to move from the old Lockport home. Prompted by the favorable report of Iowa from friends who had already emigrated there, the family - husband and wife, son Thomas and daughter Lydia - made the trip westward in October, 1864. The trip was by railroad to Galena, Illinois, the terminus of the railroad, thence by riverboat to the place which is now Clayton, and from thence by team and wagon across the prairie to the home of friends at Volga. Later a tract of ground east of town was homesteaded by Isaiah Smith and the family moved there. Thomas now actively engaged in farming, a pursuit which he followed until the year 1900, when he relinquished the farm and moved to Volga.

On February 22, 1870, Thomas Smith was united in marriage to Eliza F Keeling. Five children were born to them, Charles E. of Hamilton, Montana; Arthur, Herbert, and Ernest of Volga. Louise, the only daughter, preceded him in death in the year 1920.

Shortly after his marriage, Thomas united with the Methodist church and was always interested in the various activities and interests of the church.

Since the death of his wife in December, 1914, he has made his home with his two sons, Herbert and later with Ernest. Aside from six months' residence with Ernest in North Dakota, he has lived at Volga for more than seventy-two years. He was a familiar character to everybody, and many will miss him.

On September 29, he suffered a fall, which of itself was not serious, but the shock was more than he could withstand. The end came peacefully and quietly in the early morning of October 7.

Following a short service at the home, funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. Robert Davies, his pastor, officiated. Interment was made in Hill Crest cemetery at Volga.
